2024 Copa America Brazil Group D : Table, teams, standings, match schedule, results

Copa America : Colombia, Paraguay, and either Costa Rica or Honduras will take on the might of five-time world champion Brazil in Group D of the Copa America 2024.

The Selecao hasn’t had a great season the last two years, and they’re still without a permanent head coach. Fernando Diniz took over this year after Tite departed following their 2022 World Cup quarterfinal loss.

They were humiliated to watch their South American rivals win the trophy in Qatar last year after Argentina defeated them in the Copa America final of 2021. Barely two weeks ago, Lionel Messi and co. handed Brazil its first home loss in World Cup qualifying.

The Copa America final will take place in Miami on July 14, 2021, following a month-long competition held across the United States.

The Group D schedule, which includes Brazil and two other confirmed teams, is shown below. Additionally, there is a bracket for the elimination rounds, so if the four countries make it to the quarterfinals and beyond, they will have a good idea of what to expect.

Points are used to rank teams, followed by goal differential and goals scored. In the event that teams are tied on any of those three parameters, the head-to-head record between those countries is used to break the tie.

2024  Copa America Group D teams

Brazil

After Brazil advanced to the Copa America final on home soil in 2021, their storied reputation has taken a hit.

After winning the trophy in 2019, the Selecao was expected to win their tenth championship before falling to fierce rivals Argentina at the Maracana in private. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi and company, swept to victory in Qatar last year, and they repeated that success in November when they qualified for the World Cup.

Following their quarterfinal World Cup loss to Croatia, Brazil has been in transition. Longtime head coach Tite resigned, and Fernando Diniz, the winner of the Copa Libertadores, is Fluminense’s second interim manager. However, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) still intends to appoint Real Madrid tactician Carlo Ancelotti before the Copa.

After having knee surgery, Neymar is in a race to be fit for the competition, and Brazil lost its fourth World Cup qualifying match without winning. Maybe the Copa America draw will make people more critical of the Selecao in advance of a competition in which they might be dangerously underestimated.

Colombia

Nestor Lorenzo, an Argentinian coach, assumed the Colombian position during a precarious moment when the national team failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup during Reinaldo Rueda’s second stint as coach.

Given that Colombia is currently ranked third in the CONMEBOL standings and has won all six of its qualifying matches, that shouldn’t present too big of a challenge come 2026. The high point of that run was Luis Diaz’s electrifying late brace that helped Barranquilla defeat Brazil 2-1.

The squad is led by an experienced member. While playmaker James Rodriguez, center-backs Davinson Sanchez and Yerry Mina, and goalkeeper David Ospina, the owner of the all-time record appearance total, are all hoping to return from serious elbow injuries to start in goal.

However, if Colombia is to repeat their semifinal performance from the previous season, it will be Diaz, the winger for Liverpool, who is expected to be the X-factor.

Paraguay

Between 1998 and 2010, Paraguay qualified for four World Cups in a row and made it to the 2011 Copa America final. For the two-time continental champions, it was a golden era.

The 2011 championship match saw Uruguay, led by Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan, win 3-0, and things haven’t been good for La Albirroja since.

They have made three attempts to qualify for the expanded 2026 edition of the World Cup, but they have only won once, making their record of one win in six games concerning.

Paraguay has lost on penalties to Brazil in 2019 and Peru in 2021 in the quarterfinals of the last two Copas. This time, making it to the knockout stages would be deemed a success.

Daniel Garnero, the head coach, will be depending on two attacking players in the Premier League. Long a mainstay on his country’s squad, Miguel Almiron is reaching new heights this season with Newcastle United in the Champions League.

Although injury has delayed Julio Enciso’s progress at Brighton, the incredibly exciting forward is expected to make a comeback in the upcoming year.
