2024 Copa America Group B : Ticket and Fixture, standings, match schedule, results

Mexico, the most successful team in the North American region, was only recently drawn for the Copa America in 2024.

Only a late turnaround and a penalty shootout allowed them to advance over Honduras in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals, securing a berth in the tournament.

El Tri is the top seed in Group B, where they will meet Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica. They will be determined to prove their worth on this stage alongside the elite of two continents, especially since the World Cup will be held in North America in less than three years.

The Group B schedule, with all four teams confirmed, is shown below, along with a bracket for the knockout rounds, so the four nations will have a good indication of what to expect if they advance to the quarter final stage and beyond.

2024 Copa America Group B : Table, standings

Each Copa America group has four teams. In a round-robin system, each of these teams plays the other once. The top two players from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

Teams are ranked first by points, then by goal difference, and finally by goals scored. If teams are tied on all three criteria, the head-to-head record between those countries is used as a tiebreaker.

2024 Copa America Group B Teams

Mexico

The Copa America in 2024 will be a watershed moment for the Mexican national team. El Tri are at a crossroads with the event being hosted by their home away from home.

Mexico’s poor group-stage departure from the 2022 World Cup appears to have signalled a wider slump, and they have continued their slide in the months after. They were humiliated by the United States in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League semifinals before nearly missing out on Copa America qualification by losing in Honduras before a last-gasp comeback in the second leg secured a spot in a penalty shootout.

Mexico has been unable to find a long-term answer to lead the country since letting head coach Tata Martino leave following the World Cup defeat, as Diego Cocca failed to stick and Jaime Lozano has been under pressure since the beginning. Key offensive players like Hirving Lozano and Santiago Gimenez are out of form for the national team, and the defence has been vulnerable to counter-attacks.

A successful Copa America would restore faith in the regime ahead of the 2026 World Cup, but failure would cast the federation as a rudderless wreck with only two years to turn things around.

Ecuador

Ecuador is preparing to make its impact on the international scale as it prepares for the Copa America event. 

They are currently ranked 32nd in FIFA’s world rankings and 5th in CONMEBOL. They will be led by Spanish manager Felix Sanchez, who will take over in March 2023. 

The team’s major players, Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo and Brighton’s Pervis Estupinan, will bring vital expertise to the team’s setup. 

Caicedo’s abilities and ability to take charge of the midfield make him a potential leader for this Ecuador team, and Estupinan’s notable performances for Brighton give a layer of competence in defence. 

The combination of Caicedo’s leadership and Estupinan’s defensive nous could prove key in their pursuit of success in the United States as they approach the event with no Copa America championships to their name but a drive to change that.

Venezuela

Outsiders are perennial outsiders. Venezuela is the only CONMEBOL country that has never competed in a World Cup. All of that, however, could change under their new Argentine head coach, Fernando Batista.

La Vinotinto have gone undefeated since the first round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, defeating Paraguay and Chile while drawing with Brazil away from home. With an increased allocation of six automatic places for CONMEBOL, fans may afford to fantasise.

It implies that the Copa America arrives at an ideal time for Venezuela to benchmark itself against elite competition. A surprise run to the 2011 semi-finals may be too much to ask, but the elimination rounds are entirely within their grasp.

Along with senior campaigners like captain Tomas Rincon and all-time leading goalscorer Salomon Rondon, a core group of players from the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup squad has graduated. Girona midfielder Yangel Herrera stands out among a crop of players approaching their primes at an ideal time.

Jamaica

Jamaica was not supposed to be in this situation, but after directly qualifying for the Copa America by defeating Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League, the Reggae Boyz now have an opportunity to cement their status as the North American region’s next emerging star.

After storming through the last World Cup qualification cycle, Les Rouges were supposed to be the CONCACAF team poised to take the next step, but their humiliation at the big dance in 2022 has resulted in a setback for the Canadian federation. Jamaica has moved forward to be the next to climb to prominence.

Jamaica has one of its most talented rosters in years, with several players in their prime years in the Premier League and goalkeeper Andre Blake still going strong at 33 years old. Reaching the Copa America knockout stage would be an incredible way to communicate their aspirations to the world ahead of the 2026 World Cup in their own backyard, as well as boost their world ranking to a more respectable level more suitable for the squad they have.
