Bears vs Vikings 2023 : Monday Night Bears defeat Vikings 12-10

For the second straight game on Monday night, the Bears let a fourth-quarter lead slip. However, with 10 seconds left, Cairo Santos’ fourth field goal of the match—a 30-yarder—saw them rally for an exciting 12-10 victory.

With 5:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, Joshua Dobbs’ 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end T.J. Hockenson gave Minnesota a 10-9 lead. The Bears defence recorded four interceptions of Dobbs and prevented the Vikings from reaching the end zone.

The Bears failed to score a touchdown, but after Hockenson scored the lone touchdown of the contest, Justin Fields set up the winning field goal on third-and-10 with a 36-yard pass to DJ Moore over the middle to the Minnesota 13.

The Bears marched to the Vikings’ 24 to start the game. However, after sacking Fields, their drive came to a halt, and Santos missed a 48-yard field goal attempt wide right. During the possession, Fields completed 8 of 8 passes for 37 yards.

Later on in the second quarter, Santos completed the Bears’ second drive with a 25-yard field goal to give the team a 3-0 lead. On fourth-and-10 from the Minnesota 38, Fields maintained possession with a 24-yard pass to a wide-open Cole Kmet.

The Bears led the Vikings by a significant margin at that point in the game in total yards (119-to-minus-7), first downs (7-0), and time of possession (14:46-1:39).

Jordan Addison was the intended receiver of an underthrown pass that Jaylon Johnson intercepted and returned 20 yards, demonstrating the defence’s continued dominance. However, the offence was unable to gain a first down, forcing the Bears to punt.

At the Bears’ 35, Jaquan Brisker intercepted a pass from Dobbs that flew high in the air off Addison’s hands, marking the defence second consecutive interception. However, the offence was unable to take advantage of the turnover once more.

With seconds remaining in the first half, Greg Joseph’s 34-yard field goal tied the score at three points. Following a 28-yard pass from quarterback Joey Dobbs to wide receiver Brandon Powell and a 26-yard pass interference penalty against Kyler Gordon, the kick was made.

The Vikings had only managed 24 yards on 16 plays against a stifling Bears defence before their field goal drive. They had failed to cross the 50 yards on any of their first four possessions.

On the first drive of the second half, Gordon made a crucial play by tackling tight end T.J. Hockenson out of bounds just inches short of a first down, setting up a 6-yard reception for the Minnesota 49 on a fourth-and-7 play.

At 6:59 remaining in the third quarter, Santos made a 39-yard field goal to give the Bears a 6-3 lead. On third-and-2 from the Vikings’ 21 yard line, Moore was dropped for no gain on a quick screen pass. This led to the kick.

On a fourth-and-3 from the Bears 44, T.J. Edwards intercepted a deflected pass from quarterback Josh Dobbs at the Chicago 30, giving the defence its second straight fourth-down stop.

With 5:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, Dobbs’ 17-yard touchdown pass to Hockenson gave the Vikings a 10-9 lead. The team took advantage of the turnover.

With 3:28 left, Fields fumbled again during a scramble, but the Bears forced the Vikings to punt after a three-and-out, forcing the punt to go 22 yards, which set up the game-winning drive.

The Bears improved to 4-8 with the victory, including 4-4 since their 0-4 start.
