Bills vs Chargers 24-22 : Final score, results

Following the Bengals’ defeat earlier on Saturday, the Bills’ goal became evident: winning out would guarantee a trip back to the postseason. Though it wasn’t easy, Buffalo made progress in that direction on Saturday night.

The Buffalo barely made it through a scare from the Chargers, trailing 10-0 early in the first quarter and then again well into the fourth.

Turnovers almost brought Sean McDermott’s team to its knees once more. Thirteen points came from turnovers for the Chargers, who converted a Josh Allen interception and a crucial James Cook fumble into field goals in the second half. Their lone touchdown came after Deonte Harty threw up a punt return.

With 5:30 left in the fourth quarter, the Chargers took a 22-21 lead, applying pressure to the Bills’ offence to start showing signs of life. The device was delivered. In less than three minutes of play, Allen got the Bills into field goal range. Buffalo was able to drive the clock down to just 28 seconds when Tyler Bass scored on a 29-yard field goal that went through the uprights to take the lead.

Without timeouts, Ed Oliver’s sack quickly ended Easton Stick’s hopes of putting together a signature drive and getting the Chargers into Cameron Dicker’s expansive range in the closing seconds.

Turnovers came back to haunt Buffalo in this game, as they did in the Bills’ Week 10 loss to the Broncos, but this time, Buffalo prevailed. At this point in the season, that’s all that matters, and the Buffalo (9-6) are in control of their destiny in the AFC wild-card race and very much alive thanks to the victory, in the AFC East.

Despite the fact that the Chargers (5-10) were no longer in the running for the playoffs after the loss, they played with a lot more competitiveness under interim coach Giff Smith than they did in the Raiders’ 63-21 victory last week. Over the next two weeks, Los Angeles can only hope for competitiveness as an offseason of transition draws near.
