He broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries, which was once thought to be unbreakable. And he did it in grand style, with Tendulkar himself in the gallery !

Can he be called the ‘greatest of all time’ if he breaks Tendulkar’s record in terms of numbers? Let us unravel the mystery of that age-old question, one that many may be familiar with: can Kohli break Tendulkar’s record of 100 centuries in the 1980s ?

Virat Kohli will take a break following the World Cup. He will not play in either the One Day or T20 series in South Africa. In an interview with an Indian media outlet, another cricketing legend, Brian Lara, expressed his thoughts on Kohli’s chances of reaching the century mark.

‘Kohli’s age, right?’ Lara asked during the interview. Isn’t he 35 years old? Kohli still needs another 20 centuries. He will equal Sachin’s record if he scores four centuries per year. It’s a difficult task. Nobody can say for certain, including me. Those who predict Virat  Kohli will break Sachin Tendulkar’s century record haven’t considered cricket logic. 20 centuries is still a long time. Most cricketers will never be able to achieve that in their entire careers.’

There is no agreement with Lara, as many former cricketers hold the same opinion. Ravi Shastri, India’s former cricketer and coach, stated after the last World Cup that Kohli’s bat could produce hundreds of centuries.

But what do the facts and figures show? According to the FTP for the next three years, India will play 27 ODIs, 32 Tests, and 43 T20 Internationals. Aside from that, India will compete in the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, the Champions Trophy in 2025, and the ODI World Cup in 2027. There are also a number of Asia Cups. If Virat Kohli continues to play until 2027, excluding ICC and ACC tournaments, he will have played 102 international matches, including Tests and ODIs.

 

However, Kohli is unlikely to play in all of these games. His T20 career is already being discussed. He has only played 18 T20Is for India in the last year, after not playing T20s in the previous T20 World Cup. His match count will decrease if he continues to withdraw from this format.

Kohli may opt out of some ODIs and Tests to relieve pressure, similar to how he did during the South Africa series. There is, however, hope for Kohli fans. Kohli may play a number of matches in the ICC and ACC tournaments. However, even Kohli is unsure how many matches he will play.

However, let us make an educated guess based on the upcoming year. Kohli scored eight centuries in 34 innings in Tests and ODIs last year. That means he hits a home run every 4.25 innings. If Kohli keeps this pace, he’ll need 85 innings for 20 centuries if he starts in 2023.
