Why did Rishi Sunak cancel the meeting, with the Prime Minister of Greece ?

A meeting between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak  and  Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis  has been cancelled . Diplomatic strain between the two nations began when the United Kingdom decided to call off the meeting.

Greece took issue with the UK’s decision to forego talks regarding the Parthenon Marbles. Tuesday afternoon was to be the meeting place for these two leaders in London.

“The prime minister Rishi Sunak called off the meeting just hours before it was scheduled to take place,” the Greek prime minister stated in a statement. I would like to express how very unhappy I am with this.

The BBC reports that Mitsotakis was informed that Oliver Dowden, the British Deputy Prime Minister, could meet with him in place of Sunak. However, the plan was turned down by the Prime Minister of Greece.

What to discuss in the meeting with Rishi Sunak  and  Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Greece’s prime minister brought up their long-standing demands during the meeting. The demand is for the Greek sculptures housed in the British Museum in London to be returned.

“Greece and the United Kingdom have historically enjoyed cordial ties,” Mitsotakis said..Our bilateral relations cover a wide range of topics. Our stance on the Parthenon sculpture is well-established and widely understood.

The question of whether Sunac’s cancellation of the meeting with Greece’s prime minister was brought on by the disagreement over the Parthenon marble is currently being debated. It is purported that the sculpture was brought from Greece by a British diplomat.

“I had hoped that I would raise the matter during the discussion with the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak  of the United Kingdom,” stated the Greek prime minister. Aside from this, I’ll get to talk about things like immigration, Gaza, the Ukraine, and climate change. Someone shouldn’t be afraid to have a conversation if they believe their point of view is reasonable.

The office of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stated that the UK’s relationship with Greece is crucial. We collaborate within NATO. In addition, we are collaborating on issues related to immigration, the Middle East, and Ukraine.

The Parthenon was not mentioned in Rishi Sunak’s office statement. The press release stated, “The British Deputy Prime Minister could have discussed these issues with the Prime Minister of Greece.”

It is said that this Parthenon sculpture was brought to London in the 19th century by British diplomat Lord Elgin.

It is estimated that this sculpture dates back 2,500 years. This sculpture was located in the Acropolis Temple. It has spent two centuries in the British Museum.

Rishi Sunak declared in March of last year that the UK would not amend its legal system. Therefore, it is not possible to ship the Parthenon marble to Greece.
